Waking up is never easy, especially when it’s still dark outside. Like many, I have contemplated battling traffic for a few more hours of slumber. From the first step out of bed into the day, my body cries, “I need more sleep”! Preferably the kind referred to as “beauty sleep.”

After all, sleep is essential for mental health, and lack of shut-eye can leave you visually drained. Just like devices need recharging, your body needs recharging. Or it simply won’t function properly. In some cases, it’s hard to fight your body’s urge to attain more sleep, which can lead to potentially dangerous situations.

If the world were perfect, we wouldn’t fight our body’s urge to stay in bed and wake up with the sunrise. Humans function best when we aren’t drifting in and out of shutdown mode.

These visual signs may cause people to treat you differently with less workload or keeping a distance, assuming you are ill.

According to sleep foundation.org, adults 18 and up need 7 to 9 hours per night. This data emerged from a panel of experts reviewing collaborative research regarding sleep and health.

The best time to go to bed for most adults is from 8 pm to 12 pm. It gives your body time to go through all the necessary NREM and REM cycles. The sleep cycles follow the circadian rhythm (our body’s internal clock). Additionally, three stages of NREM sleep benefit detoxification, body repair, and rejuvenation functions. On the other hand, REM sleep is essential for mental processes, such as learning and memory.

The later you go to bed, you can miss vital stages of beauty sleep that leave you looking and feeling well-rested.

Can’t Let The Sleeping Beauty Sleep

Parents and caretakers are at the forefront of being woken mid-sleep to oblige the needs of their child or patient. Constantly, disrupted doze can leave them feeling exhausted with less energy to tend to their own needs.
