Callused Feet? Prevent & Treat With These Tips

Why Do We Get Callused Feet?

The skin on our soles requires a different type of care. It adapts to the surfaces that we walk on. Concrete surfaces, tile flooring, standing in the tub without a bathmat, and wearing shoes with thin insoles are things that can cause callused feet.

It is a protection mechanism that allows you to stand on these surfaces without causing harm to your feet. However, the callused skin does not easily come off and requires manual exfoliation to moisturize and soften. Below are ways to alleviate your feet. The time it takes for total improvement depends on the level of callus.

Revlon Pedi Expert Foot Exfoliator

The Revlon Pedi Expert Exfoliator removes the callus from feet like magic! Before using this product, I tried pumice stones, an electric exfoliator, and graters similar to the Revlon Exfoliator. If any callus came off, it was very minimal. None of them work on the level of the Revlon Pedi Expert!

The grater is not sharp to the touch, yet it easily removes the callus without preparation to the feet. Just take the red top off and rub away! The callus flakes retain in a compartment attached to the grater, for easy cleaning.

You will be amazed at how much foot dust comes off! For best usage, pace the exfoliation out within weeks. Removing too much callus at once will cause redness and irritation.

A nail file and clipper come with the Pedi Expert Exfoliator. Below are tips to prevent callused feet.

Limit Walking On Surfaces With Your Bare Feet!

Keep Your House Shoes On

At home, I kick back and toss my shoes off after a long day! When my house shoes aren’t nearby, I walk around barefoot and let my feet feel the breeze.

When I had carpet flooring, my feet remained soft and unscathed from being barefoot. However, that quickly changed when I moved to a residence with hard tile flooring.

I have to keep multiple house shoes around to keep a cushioned barrier on my feet. Otherwise, it’s rock city! It’s astonishing how quickly they harden, so wear your house shoes!

Buy a high-quality house shoe for prolonged durability. I purchased house shoes from the dollar store for around $6, and the insoles did not hold for very long.

Within a week, wearing those house shoes was no different from walking on the bare tile.

Get A Bath Mat To Prevent Callused Feet

I originally got a bath mat for decorative purposes to add spice to the bathroom decor. Yet, loathe the redundant cleaning that came with having it, so I threw it away.

I noticed that my feet would start to feel sore when taking showers, and the texture seemed a bit hardened. I realized the difference was the bath mat, as it provided a soft cushion for my feet.

Bath mats advertise for anti-slip use, but they also protect your feet and keep them supple.

A Good Pair of Shoes Can Diminish Callused Feet

A quality pair of shoes is a good investment in foot health. Some shoes, particularly sandals, have little to no padding.

Wearing shoes with minimum padding is like walking on the surface itself. The shoes will wear down quicker from the weight of your body.

Sandals that have no padding will make your feet sore and rough. I once walked around the fair in unpadded sandals; that was a disaster!

My feet were aching, and my heels became callused!

A good pair of shoes have thick insoles and a broad tip that allows your toes to fit without compaction. The proper support prevents your feet from becoming callused.

I recommend Adidas Ortholite shoes, the best unintentional gift I ever got! Walking and running in other shoes would cause foot pain.

With Adidas Ortholite, I didn’t experience any issues at all. I could stay on the treadmill longer. They are now my official walking shoes.

They’ve lasted me over two years and are still in perfect condition!

Other quality brands I have yet to try are New Balance and Sketchers. Past coworkers have told me the shoes are comfortable with supportive insoles.

The quality may depend on specific shoes within the brand. If you have tried these brands before, then comment below about your experience wearing them.

Seal the Moisture

*This step is not advised if a fungal infection is present on the feet. The condition may worsen.*

Nighttime is the perfect time to lock in moisture and soften your feet! Before you go to bed, rub a thick oil or cream on your feet, focusing on the soles of your feet.

Albolene moisturizing cleanser and castor oil are proficient in softening and lubricating thick skin.

If you aren’t a fan of having thick oils and creams on your feet at night, moisture-infused socks are a good alternative. The socks contain essential oils, aloe, and vitamins. If worn consistently at night, your feet will soften.

No More Callused Feet!

I hope you enjoyed this post and found the tips helpful for removing and preventing callus. Those with diabetes and autoimmune disease should consult with their healthcare provider to safely use the tips mentioned.

How do I remove callused skin on my feet?

1. Exfoliate the callused skin with a pumice or the Revlon Pedi Exfoliator. Avoid irritating the skin by removing too much callus at once.
2. Wear house shoes at home, especially if you don’t have carpet. This protects your soles against the hard surface.
3. Shoes worn daily should have thick insoles and fit properly to avoid putting pressure on the feet.
4. Apply a thick moisturizing cream nightly and put on socks to retain the moisture. Shea Butter, Albolene moisturizing cleanser, and Vaseline are effective in softening and moisturizing rough skin.
5. Be patient and persistent with your routine until the callus is gone.
